Jasmine Reviews – Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief

The Lightning Thief is the first book in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

Percy Jackson is a normal kid until monsters start chasing him. Percy is living in New York City with his mum (Sally) and his really mean stepdad (Gabe). He has a best friend, Grover Underwood, who is living a second life that Percy doesn’t know about yet. After Percy’s first monster attack, Grover must keep Percy safe. He escorts Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a place for the half-human children of Greek gods.

There at the camp, Percy unlocks his true self. But after just a few days at camp, Percy is assigned a quest; a quest that nearly kills him more than once. Taking his two best friends, Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase, they set off to the Underworld to confront Hades, lord of the Underworld. It doesn’t help that Percy is tricked more than once. Percy makes the biggest mistake when he makes a true enemy, one that could disrupt his every move.

I think that Percy Jackson is a great educational book for Greek mythology geeks like me. I personally love how there is no dull moment in the whole book. The plot line is fast moving but slow enough that you understand every bit. Rick Riordan didn’t stop there though; he has written another four books in the series. I love the detail that Rick Riordan has put into this book. The detail is so extreme that I feel like I am in the moment. Rick Riordan has done a fabulous job in making learning about mythology fun in this exhilarating book. I would recommend it to anyone.

I give this book 5 out of 5.
